What exactly is a biodiversity hotspot?
A biodiversity hotspot is not simply a place with a lot of wildlife. It is a precise, threshold-based category. The term was coined by the British ecologist Norman Myers in 1988, and the global list is maintained today by the organisation Conservation International. To qualify as a hotspot, a region must meet two conditions at the same time — and the "at the same time" is the part aspirants forget.
Why plants and not tigers or birds? Because plants form the base of every ecosystem — they are the producers on which all other life depends. If a region has thousands of unique plant species, the animal endemism almost always follows. And why insist on the 70 percent habitat loss? Because the whole point of the "hotspot" idea is conservation triage. Myers was trying to answer a hard question: with limited money and time, where should the world concentrate its protection efforts to save the most unique life from the greatest danger? Hotspots are, by definition, the places where extraordinary richness meets extraordinary threat.
Here is a figure worth memorising because it captures the paradox perfectly: the world's hotspots together cover only about 2.4 percent of the Earth's land surface, yet they hold more than half of the world's plant species and close to 43 percent of its birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians as endemics. 1. The Himalaya
The youngest and highest mountains on the planet, stretching in a great arc across northern India and into Nepal and Bhutan. The staggering altitude range — from foothill forests to alpine meadows to permanent snow — packs an enormous variety of habitats into a small horizontal distance, which is exactly why endemism is so high here. It is home to charismatic species such as the snow leopard, the red panda, the Himalayan tahr and the takin, and to thousands of endemic flowering plants. The eastern Himalaya in particular is one of the richest botanical zones on Earth.
2. Indo-Burma
One of the most biologically rich and, sadly, most threatened hotspots in the world. Its Indian share is the North-East (the hill states south of the Brahmaputra) together with the Andaman Islands. This region has produced a stream of new species discoveries in recent decades — freshwater turtles, fish, even large mammals — and holds remarkable diversity of primates and birds. Remember the North-East here, and remember that the Andamans belong to Indo-Burma, not to Sundaland.
3. The Western Ghats and Sri Lanka
The one hotspot most aspirants can name — and rightly so. The Western Ghats run parallel to India's western coast through six states — Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu — and are famous for their exceptional endemism: a very large share of the region's amphibians, reptiles and freshwater fish are found nowhere else. The Ghats also perform a vital ecological service by intercepting the south-west monsoon, which shapes the climate of peninsular India. The range was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Species you should be able to name include the lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri tahr and the Malabar civet.
4. Sundaland
The least-known of India's four, and therefore the favourite of a tricky examiner. Sundaland is a South-East Asian hotspot centred on the Malay Peninsula and the great islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java. Its only Indian toehold is the Nicobar Islands. If you take away one non-obvious fact from this article, take this: the Nicobar Islands sit in Sundaland, while the Andaman Islands sit in Indo-Burma. Two neighbouring island groups, two different hotspots.
Why hotspots are worth protecting — and why they are shrinking
The value of a hotspot is not sentimental. These regions are living libraries of genetic material — the wild relatives of crops, the sources of countless medicines, the pollinators and water-regulators that entire economies quietly depend on. When you lose an endemic species, you lose it from the planet, permanently; there is no other population anywhere to recover it from. That irreversibility is what makes hotspot conservation a global priority rather than a local hobby.
And the threats are real and current. The very criterion that defines a hotspot — 70 percent habitat already lost — tells you these are landscapes under pressure. Deforestation, expanding agriculture and plantations, infrastructure and dams, mining, invasive species, and now climate change are all chipping away at them. In Prelims, expect factual and statement-based questions: "How many of the world's biodiversity hotspots are found in India?", "Which of the following islands is part of the Sundaland hotspot?", or a match-the-following linking hotspots to species or states. In Mains GS Paper III, the demand shifts to analysis — the pressures on the Western Ghats, the tension between development and conservation, or the effectiveness of India's protected-area network in safeguarding these regions. Prepare both layers from a single set of notes.
A word on the neighbouring concepts, because examiners deliberately mix them up. A biodiversity hotspot is a global category defined by endemism and threat. Do not confuse it with a biosphere reserve (a nationally notified conservation unit, some of which join UNESCO's world network), a national park or wildlife sanctuary (legal protected-area categories under Indian law), or a Ramsar site (an internationally important wetland).
