In three decades of mentoring aspirants I have seen one truth hold firm: the candidate who has the Indus Valley Civilisation firmly in hand starts ancient history with confidence, because almost every year the exam returns to it. Master this one chapter properly and you build a base that pays across both Prelims and Mains.
The Indus Valley Civilisation — also called the Harappan Civilisation, after Harappa, the first site excavated — is the foundation of India's recorded past. It is a favourite of the examiner precisely because it is factual, contained and well-documented: there is a clear list of sites, a clear set of features, and a clear debate about its decline. That makes it eminently scorable. What follows is not a bundle of trivia to be crammed the night before an exam, but a structured understanding of the civilisation that will stay with you for the whole preparation cycle. Read it slowly, keep the site table nearby, and return to it whenever a current-affairs item about a new excavation appears in the newspaper.
1. Discovery, dating and phases
The civilisation was formally brought to light in 1921–22, when the Archaeological Survey of India excavated Harappa (on the Ravi, in present-day Pakistan) under Daya Ram Sahni, and Mohenjo-daro (on the Indus, in Sindh) under Rakhal Das Banerji. Sir John Marshall, then Director-General of the ASI, announced the discovery to the world in 1924. Until then, India's history was thought to begin with the Vedic age; these excavations pushed it back by well over a thousand years and revealed a sophisticated urban culture contemporary with Mesopotamia and Egypt.
The civilisation is a Bronze Age culture. Its full span runs roughly from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE, but its celebrated Mature (urban) phase is dated to about 2600–1900 BCE. Historians divide it into three broad stages, and knowing this three-fold scheme protects you against tricky Prelims options:
- Early Harappan (c. 3300–2600 BCE) — the formative, pre-urban phase, marked by early farming settlements, the beginnings of trade and craft specialisation.
- Mature Harappan (c. 2600–1900 BCE) — the great urban phase of planned cities, standardised weights, seals, and long-distance trade. This is what the exam usually means by "the Indus Valley Civilisation".
- Late Harappan (c. 1900–1300 BCE) — the phase of de-urbanisation, when the great cities were abandoned and the culture fragmented into smaller regional traditions.
2. Geographical extent
This is the single most under-appreciated fact among beginners. The Indus Valley Civilisation was the largest of the ancient civilisations by area — far larger than Egypt or Mesopotamia. It formed a rough triangle spread across present-day Pakistan and north-western India, covering parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, western Uttar Pradesh, Jammu, and Sindh and Baluchistan.
Learn its four cardinal boundaries as a mental map — the examiner loves to test them:
- North: Manda (on the Chenab, in Jammu & Kashmir).
- South: Daimabad (on the Godavari, in Maharashtra).
- East: Alamgirpur (on the Hindon, in Uttar Pradesh).
- West: Sutkagendor (near the Makran coast, close to the Iran border).
A large share of the mapped sites in fact lie along the now-dry Ghaggar-Hakra river system, not the Indus itself — which is why many scholars prefer the broader label "Indus-Saraswati" or simply "Harappan Civilisation" over "Indus Valley Civilisation". If a question asks why the name "Indus Valley" is considered a partial misnomer, this is your answer.
3. Town planning — the crown jewel of the syllabus
If you remember one theme from this chapter, make it town planning. Nothing else about the Harappans impresses the examiner — or the modern reader — as much as the discipline of their cities. The features below recur in question after question:
- Grid pattern: streets and lanes cut each other at right angles, dividing the city into rectangular blocks. This is deliberate planning, not organic growth.
- Citadel and Lower Town: most major cities had two parts — a raised, fortified citadel to the west (housing public buildings and the elite) and a larger lower town to the east (residential and commercial). The physical separation suggests social stratification.
- Drainage system: the most advanced of the ancient world. Every house drain connected to covered street drains, complete with soak-pits and manholes for cleaning. No other Bronze Age civilisation matched this obsession with sanitation.
- Standardised burnt bricks: bricks were made to a fixed ratio (length : breadth : thickness of 4 : 2 : 1) and used across the entire civilisation — a remarkable sign of centralised standardisation over a vast area.
- The Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro: a large, watertight public tank, probably used for ritual bathing. It is the most famous public structure of the civilisation.
- The Great Granary: the largest building at Mohenjo-daro; Harappa too had granaries, pointing to a surplus, storage and an organised economy.
4. Economy: farming, crafts and trade
The Harappan economy rested on agriculture, animal husbandry, craft production and an unusually wide trade network. They cultivated wheat, barley, peas, sesame and mustard, and — importantly for the exam — the Harappans were among the earliest peoples in the world to produce cotton; the Greeks later called it sindon, derived from Sindh. They knew the plough, evidence of which comes from a ploughed field at Kalibangan.
They were a Bronze Age people, so they used copper, bronze, gold and silver — but crucially they did not know iron. This single fact is a classic Prelims trap: if an option credits the Harappans with iron tools, it is wrong. Domesticated animals included cattle, sheep, goats and the buffalo; the humped bull was clearly revered. The horse is a debated, marginal presence and should not be treated as a defining Harappan animal.
Trade was both internal and external. The famous cubical chert weights follow a binary and decimal system (1, 2, 4, 8 … 16) — evidence of a standardised commercial regime. Externally, the Harappans traded with Mesopotamia; Mesopotamian records refer to trade with Meluhha, widely identified with the Harappan region, and with the intermediate points Dilmun (Bahrain) and Magan (Makran/Oman). Lothal in Gujarat has what is generally interpreted as a dockyard, marking it as a great port and bead-making centre.
5. Major sites and their signature findings
This is the table every serious aspirant keeps within arm's reach. Prelims frequently asks you to match a site with what was found there, so learn it by the signature finding, not by rote listing.

Two of these deserve a fuller word for 2026. Dholavira, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021, is prized for its remarkable system of stone-built water reservoirs — a lesson in ancient water management that examiners increasingly like to connect with today's water-security debates. And Rakhigarhi in Haryana, spread across the Ghaggar-Hakra plain, is now recognised as the largest Harappan site by area, having surpassed Mohenjo-daro; the Archaeological Survey of India continues to excavate it, and a large museum dedicated to Harappan culture is being developed there. Because both are live news stories, they are exactly the kind of static-plus-dynamic overlap the exam rewards.
6. Art, craft and religion
The Harappans were skilled artists and craftsmen. Their finest achievements include the bronze "Dancing Girl" of Mohenjo-daro (made by the lost-wax method), the steatite "Priest-King" bust, and a vast number of seals — usually square, made of steatite, carved with animal motifs and an as-yet-undeciphered script. The most famous is the so-called Pashupati seal, showing a seated figure surrounded by animals. They produced red-and-black painted pottery, beads of carnelian and other stones, terracotta figurines, and toys.
On religion, note carefully what the evidence does and does not show. The Harappans left no temples and no monumental religious architecture. What we infer comes from figurines and seals: the worship of a Mother Goddess (fertility cult), a proto-Shiva or Pashupati figure, reverence for the Pipal tree and the humped bull, and probably the worship of natural forces. There is evidence of the practice of burial rather than a single fixed rite. For a Mains-style answer, the safe formulation is: "the Harappans' religion was almost certainly nature-based and centred on fertility, inferred entirely from material remains, since we cannot read their script."
7. The script and the limits of our knowledge
The Harappan script remains undeciphered. It is pictographic — around 400 to 600 signs — and was written boustrophedon: generally right to left in the first line, then left to right in the next, like a plough turning in a field. Because we cannot read it, we have no names of kings, no dynastic lists, no religious texts. This is why almost everything we say about Harappan society is an inference from archaeology, and why the exam often frames questions around what we do not know. Never overstate Harappan "history"; describe it as reconstructed material culture.
8. Decline — argue it as multi-causal
By around 1900 BCE the great cities were in decline; the drains silted up, standardisation broke down, long-distance trade shrank and the population dispersed into smaller villages. What caused it? Do not commit to a single dramatic cause — the modern consensus is that the collapse was gradual and multi-causal. The likely contributing factors are:
- Climatic change and a weakening monsoon, making agriculture less reliable.
- Changes in river courses — the drying or shifting of the Ghaggar-Hakra and repeated flooding of the Indus.
- Ecological stress — deforestation, over-exploitation of land, and possibly increasing salinity.
- The decline of trade with Mesopotamia, which weakened the urban economy.
The old "Aryan invasion" theory — that invaders destroyed the cities — is no longer accepted by mainstream scholarship as the cause of the decline. If an option in the exam attributes the fall of the Harappan cities solely to an Aryan invasion, treat it with suspicion.
9. How to study this for the exam
Here is the approach I have given aspirants for years, and it still works. First, read the relevant NCERT and one standard reference for understanding, not memorisation. Second, build a single one-page sheet with three boxes: the site-to-finding table, the town-planning features, and the decline factors. Third, revise that one page repeatedly rather than re-reading long chapters. Fourth, practise objective questions until you can spot the classic traps — iron (they had none), the horse (marginal and debated), and single-cause decline (wrong).

Is the Indus Valley Civilisation important for UPSC Prelims?
Yes, it is one of the most reliably tested slices of ancient history. Prelims questions cluster around which site gave which finding, the features of town planning, the extent of the civilisation, and metals or crops the Harappans knew. A candidate who has memorised the site-to-finding table and understands the drainage and Great Bath features can usually answer whatever the paper asks.
