Soils of India: Types, Classification and Features

Soils are one of the most reliable scoring areas in UPSC Geography — the facts are settled, the questions are predictable, and a single well-made table can lock the whole topic into memory for good. Yet aspirants routinely lose these easy marks by memorising soil names without ever tying them to region, crop and rock. This guide fixes that for good.

In three decades of mentoring, I have seen soils appear in the Prelims almost every other year — a match-the-following of soil type and state, a statement about which soil suits cotton, a question on why the northern plains are so fertile. None of it is hard. The trick is to stop learning soils as eight isolated names and start seeing them as a story of climate, rock and river working on the land. Learn it that way once, and you will never confuse red soil with laterite again.

What is soil, and why the exam cares

Soil is the thin, loose upper layer of the earth's crust in which plants grow — a mixture of weathered rock (the mineral matter), decomposed organic matter called humus, water and air. It takes centuries to form even a few centimetres, which is precisely why soil conservation is a recurring GS Paper 1 and Paper 3 theme. The five factors that control soil formation are the parent rock, climate, relief (slope), natural vegetation, and time. Keep those five in mind and every soil type below becomes logical rather than something to cram.

Coach's tip Do not memorise soils alphabetically or randomly. Memorise them by how they were made — transported (alluvial), formed in place from lava (black), from crystalline rock (red), by intense leaching (laterite), by aridity (desert), by salt accumulation (saline). Once the cause is clear, the location and the crop follow automatically, and match-the-following questions become free marks.

The ICAR eight-fold classification

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) groups Indian soils into eight major types. This is the classification the examiner expects — commit these eight names to memory as your master list, then hang every detail on them.

1. Alluvial soil — India's breadbasket

Alluvial soil is the most widespread and the most important, covering close to 40 per cent of the land area and supporting the largest share of the population. It is transported soil, laid down by the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra as they emerge from the mountains, and again in the deltas of the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri on the peninsular coast. Because it is deposited rather than weathered in place, it is generally fine, deep and highly fertile — rich in potash but usually poor in phosphorus and nitrogen.

A distinction the examiner loves is between khadar and bhangar. Khadar is the new, light-coloured alluvium of the floodplains, renewed and enriched by silt every monsoon, and highly fertile. Bhangar is the older alluvium of higher terraces, darker, more clayey, and often containing lime nodules called kankar. If a question asks which alluvium is fresh and fertile, the answer is khadar; the older, kankar-bearing one is bhangar.

2. Black soil (regur) — the cotton soil

Black soil, known as regur or black cotton soil, is formed in situ from the weathering of the Deccan lava (basalt) and is concentrated on the Deccan trap — Maharashtra, western Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is clayey, deep and dark, its colour owing to iron compounds and humus. Its defining property is moisture retention: it holds water tenaciously and swells when wet, then contracts and develops wide cracks when dry.

These cracks give it the famous self-ploughing character — the soil aerates itself — which, combined with its water-holding capacity, makes it ideal for rainfed cotton that must survive long dry spells. Chemically it is rich in lime, iron, magnesia and alumina and potash, but poor in phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter. A frequent trap: when wet, black soil becomes sticky and very difficult to work, so it is best tilled immediately after the first rains.

Coach's tip Fix the crop pairings hard, because that is where marks are won or lost: black → cotton, laterite → tea/coffee/cashew, alluvial → wheat/rice/sugarcane, red → millets/groundnut. If you get only these four right, you clear most soil MCQs, because the examiner returns to them again and again.

3. Red and yellow soil

Red soil develops on the old crystalline and metamorphic rocks of the peninsula in areas of comparatively low rainfall — across the eastern and southern Deccan, Chhotanagpur plateau, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and the southern middle Ganga plain fringes. Its red colour comes from the diffusion of iron in the parent rock; it turns yellowish where it occurs in a hydrated form. These soils are generally porous and light-textured, deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and humus, but they respond well to fertiliser and irrigation. On the uplands they are poor and gravelly, while in the lower plains and valleys they can be fairly fertile.

4. Laterite soil

Laterite soil is the product of intense leaching under conditions of high temperature and heavy seasonal rainfall — exactly the climate of the Western Ghats crests, the Eastern Ghats, the hills of Karnataka, Kerala, and parts of Assam and Odisha. Repeated wetting and drying washes away the silica and leaves behind iron and aluminium oxides, so the soil is rich in iron, acidic, and low in fertility, nitrogen and humus. Its name comes from the Latin later, meaning brick, because the hardened material has long been cut into building blocks.

Despite its poverty for cereals, laterite on the hill slopes, when treated with manure and fertiliser, supports the great plantation crops — tea, coffee, rubber and cashew. Remember laterite as the soil of high hills and high rainfall; that single association will separate it cleanly from red soil, which forms in the opposite, drier setting.

5. Arid and desert soil

Arid soils range from red to brown and are typical of western Rajasthan and adjoining arid tracts of Gujarat and Haryana. They are sandy, saline in places, and low in humus and moisture because evaporation exceeds rainfall. Being dry, the nitrogen content is low, but the soils are not intrinsically infertile — where irrigation has been extended, as through canal systems in Rajasthan, these soils have been brought under cultivation of bajra and other hardy crops. The lower horizons are often choked with kankar (calcium carbonate), which restricts water infiltration.

6. Saline and alkaline soil

Also called usara soils, these contain a high proportion of sodium, potassium and magnesium salts and are therefore infertile and unable to support most vegetation. They occur in arid and semi-arid regions, in waterlogged and swampy tracts, and in coastal belts where seawater intrudes. Poor drainage and over-irrigation worsen salinity by drawing salts to the surface through capillary action. Reclamation is possible — adding gypsum and improving drainage are the standard remedies, a fact worth carrying into GS Paper 3 land-degradation answers.

7. Peaty and marshy soil

Peaty soils form in areas of heavy rainfall and high humidity where a large quantity of dead organic matter accumulates, giving the soil a rich humus and organic content — the organic matter can be very high. They are heavy, black and often acidic. You will find them in the Kerala backwaters (Kuttanad), the Sundarbans of West Bengal, coastal Odisha, and parts of Tamil Nadu. Where drained, they can be productive for rice.

8. Forest and mountain soil

Forest soils occur on the hill slopes of the Himalayas and higher peninsular ranges wherever forests provide the organic cover. Their character varies sharply with altitude and slope: in the snow-bound higher reaches they are acidic and low in humus (denudation strips them), while in the lower valleys they are loamy, silty and fertile. On the gentler slopes they support tea, coffee, spices and temperate fruits — an association worth remembering alongside laterite for plantation questions.

Soil degradation and conservation — the GS Paper 3 angle

Knowing the types is half the topic; the examiner increasingly asks about what threatens them. India loses vast quantities of fertile soil each year to erosion, and the main culprits are running water (gully and sheet erosion), wind erosion in the arid west, deforestation, overgrazing and faulty farming on slopes. The results — ravines in the Chambal, gullying in the plateaus, salinisation from over-irrigation, and loss of soil fertility — feed directly into questions on food security and sustainable agriculture.

The standard conservation measures are worth listing crisply because they convert into ready answer-writing points: contour ploughing and terracing on slopes, strip cropping and shelter belts against wind, afforestation and controlled grazing to bind the soil, checking of gullies through check-dams, and correcting salinity and alkalinity through gypsum and drainage. If a question asks for measures, group them as mechanical (terracing, bunding), biological (afforestation, cover crops) and chemical (gypsum) — that structure alone reads like a topper's answer.

How to revise soils so they stick

Soils reward a specific revision method. First, learn the eight names cold. Second, for each soil, fix a triplet — parent material or process, region, and signature crop. Third, drill the confusable pairs the examiner exploits: khadar versus bhangar, red versus laterite, black versus alluvial.
