Critical Minerals Hackathon Targets Better Prospectivity Maps and a Searchable R&D Evidence Base
The Ministry of Mines launched a Critical Minerals Innovation Hackathon under the National Critical Mineral Mission. One problem asks participants to use open geoscience data to map prospects for lithium and rare-earth-element bearing pegmatites and validate results against known occurrences. The other asks for a web platform that can track research, patents, technologies and institutions working on critical minerals. The Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre in Nagpur is hosting the challenge. The two tasks address different bottlenecks: exploration decisions are weakened when geological datasets remain fragmented, while innovation policy is weakened when decision-makers cannot see existing capabilities or duplication. Useful outputs must be reproducible, explain uncertainty, document data provenance and remain interoperable with public systems. How to study this story
Critical-mineral security begins with better geological knowledge but does not end at a map. Prospectivity models combine scattered observations to prioritise where detailed exploration may be worthwhile. They can reduce search cost, yet their output is probabilistic. Training data may overrepresent known deposits, and a visually confident map can conceal uncertainty. Reproducible methods should therefore publish data lineage, assumptions, validation results and confidence bands. Human geoscientists remain responsible for interpreting terrain and deciding the next survey. A searchable research-and-patent platform addresses another coordination failure: institutions may duplicate work or miss domestic expertise because information is fragmented. The platform needs common metadata, updated ownership, interoperable interfaces and rules for commercially sensitive material. Hackathons are useful for widening participation and testing unconventional approaches, but prototypes often decay after the event.
