Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Makes Clean-Air Policy an Outcome and Verification Challenge
The fifth Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan in 2026 assessed all 130 cities covered by the National Clean Air Programme across three population groups. The process combines city self-assessment, State monitoring, Central Pollution Control Board evaluation and independent field verification, with recognition for 10 best-performing cities. The PRANA portal tracks action across the 130 cities in 24 States and Union Territories, while performance-linked grants total ₹16,425 crore. According to the release, comparing 2025-26 with the 2017-18 baseline, 108 cities recorded lower particulate matter readings, 72 achieved reductions above 20%, 26 exceeded 40%, and 14 met the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter of size ten micrometres or less. A best-practices compendium seeks to spread workable interventions.
