Deep-Sea Mining Ambition Must Wait for Rules, Evidence and Environmental Legitimacy
The Ministry of Earth Sciences and the National Institute of Ocean Technology convened an industry workshop on deep-sea mining and critical minerals. The official release says India holds an International Seabed Authority exploration contract over 75,000 square kilometres in the Central Indian Ocean Basin, where polymetallic nodules are estimated at roughly 366 to 380 million tonnes. Under the ₹4,077 crore Deep Ocean Mission, an indigenous crawler system has been demonstrated at depths exceeding 5,000 metres. The same release acknowledges a crucial legal boundary: commercial nodule mining in international waters can begin only after the International Seabed Authority adopts an exploitation code. Exploration capacity therefore does not equal permission to mine.
