CAZRI Moth Bean Trial Links Drought-Tolerant Breeding with Seed-System Readiness

ICAR-CAZRI reported that four recently released moth bean varieties, CAZRI Moth-4 to Moth-7, withstood an approximately 35-day dry spell during Kharif 2026 in western Rajasthan. Moth bean occupies nearly 10 lakh hectares there, often under 150–250 mm rainfall and usual dry spells of 20–30 days, with productivity around 350 kg per hectare. At the institute farm, the last significant rain was 86 mm on 2 August; surface-soil moisture later fell from about 15–16% to 5–6%, while deeper moisture declined more slowly. The release also credited timely sowing, 45 by 10 cm spacing and interculture after 20 days, showing that varietal genetics and crop management worked together.
